ISS helps the world work better. In partnership with customers, ISS drives the engagement and well-being of people, minimizes the impact on the environment, and protects and maintains properties. ISS brings all of this to life through a unique combination of data, insight and service excellence at offices, factories, airports, hospitals and other locations across the globe. In 2018, ISS Group’s global revenue amounted to DKK 73.5 billion.
In the ISS Corporate Garage, we strive to better understand how emerging technology domains like AI can impact the service industry, our customers and our business. The purpose of the ISS Corporate Garage is to unleash innovation power and on that agenda, the partnership with Valuer has provided valuable insights into how we can leverage existing data into actionable knowledge using AI.
The ISS Corporate Garage, active since 2016, is an innovative and autonomous unit living outside of ISS with the focus of unleashing the innovation power of ISS. It serves as an autonomous start-up lab, where staff, visitors, and collaborative partners can develop new ideas and bring service innovations out of the Garage and into the market to the benefit of ISS’ customers.
Artificial intelligence, once a fantasy reserved solely for the science fiction writer, is now rapidly climbing its way to all industries. ISS, through the ISS Corporate Garage, which acts as an autonomous start-up lab, recently started experimenting with the technology’s power to enhance a company’s customer-centric approach.
In their long-term quest to better understand the clients, the ISS Corporate Garage has partnered with Valuer, a Copenhagen-based startup which uses AI and machine learning to match corporations with startups that will encourage innovation in a large organization.
The two companies have so far successfully developed a Proof of Concept that a machine learning algorithm can be used to analyze the large volumes of customer data gathered by ISS throughout the years, in order to find patterns and connections that have not been previously linked.
Regarding the perks of experimenting with artificial intelligence, René Giese, Co-Founder and CSO at Valuer.ai, shared that:
"The true power of AI lies in how it enables companies to ask better questions by connecting the dots between underlying problems and their matching innovative solutions."
At this stage of development, the algorithm shows that it can be used in the deeper understanding of customers by recognizing their unique innovation needs, and even more importantly – identifying the best-fitting solutions for those needs. This can be accomplished by taking an approach based on a set of strategic themes where innovation can make a difference, such as “Smart Buildings”, “The Future of Work”, “Happiness and Well-Being of Employees”, and more.

said Ulla Riber, Head of Corporate Garage at ISS A/S.
One of the most effective advantages of the algorithm system would be the ability to find the needs and their corresponding solutions for simulated scenarios. This way, an account manager would be able to find out how a change in a customer’s, for example, revenue or number of employees, would change their innovation needs.
